Hematopathology

STPA’s Hematopathology Division specializes in diagnosing disorders of the lymph nodes, bone marrow, blood, spleen, and mucosal lymphoid tissues (MALT).

We employ a comprehensive approach which includes:

• Immunohistochemistry – Onsite
• Flow Cytometry Analysis – Onsite
• In Situ Hybridization & Immunofluorescence – Onsite and Reference
• Targeted & Cellular Therapy Biomarkers – Onsite and Reference
• Cytogenetic and FISH Studies – Onsite and Reference
• Genetic & Next-Generation Sequencing – Onsite and Reference
• Minimal Residual Disease Testing – Onsite and Reference

This integrated methodology ensures accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans for hematologic disorders. Our access to top-tier diagnostic and genetic testing—both onsite and through reference laboratories—provides gold-standard options for our patients.

Common diagnostic evaluations and consultations include:

  • Acute and Chronic Leukemias (ALL, AML, CLL, CML)
  • Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (CHL, NHL, NLPHL)
  • Multiple Myeloma and Lymphoplasmacytic Lymphoma (MM, LPL)
  • Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)
  • Myeloproliferative Neoplasms including Polycythemia Vera (MPN, PV, ET, PMF)
  • Aplastic Anemia and Bone Marrow Failure Disorders (AA, BMF)

Hematopathologists are essential in diagnosing leukemia and lymphoma by interpreting complex immunophenotypes, genetic mutations, and molecular markers to guide accurate staging, prognosis, and treatment. We also work with the Methodist Hospital Cellular Therapy Laboratory and the Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Program to monitor post-transplant patients and optimize long-term survival.
